Low Emission Zones

Europe continues to pay closer attention to the problem of pollution in residential areas and on major road networks, not just as far as traffic flow is concerned, this being tackled by creating congestion zones, but also in dealing with the more serious question of limiting damage to health.

Indeed, recent international studies have shown that harmful emissions are caused by not only road traffic but also heating systems, it is therefore necessary to ask national governments to take more widespread action.

LEZ: ENVIRONMENTAL AREAS
Low Emission Zones were first introduced around a decade ago in Scandinavia and have subsequently spread to Northern Europe (Berlin, Amsterdam), England (London) and Italy (Milan) with numerous other local schemes.

London represents the wider Low Emission Zone with an area of  1600km2 involving all road networks inside the M25 motorway.

The need to implement similar solutions to those of the large LEZs is currently persuading various European and other countries to consider the introduction of across-the-board measures as London and Berlin.
